Enemas for LARS Relief

Why Enemas Work

How To Manage Incontinence Holistically

Introduction

Incontinence is a condition many people silently suffer with, and yet it touches millions of lives around the world. Whether you're facing fecal incontinence, urinary incontinence, stress incontinence, or challenges related to surgical interventions such as Lower Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS), the reality is this: your daily life can be profoundly impacted. From the fear of leaving the house to disrupted sleep, food anxiety, and the painful loss of personal dignity, incontinence is more than a medical issue. It's a daily emotional and social hardship.

But there is hope. And often, that hope arrives in the form of a therapeutic enema.

What Is Incontinence?

Incontinence refers to the involuntary loss of urine or feces. It can occur due to a variety of reasons — age-related muscle weakening, nerve damage, childbirth, surgery, or conditions such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and LARS. Stress incontinence, one of the most common forms, is triggered by physical movements such as coughing, sneezing, or laughing. In men, urinary incontinence is frequently linked to prostate surgery or chronic inflammation.

LARS and the Loss of Control

Recently, I was contacted by Kate, whose husband Russ suffers from LARS following colorectal cancer surgery that removed his rectum. This condition includes a constellation of symptoms: fecal incontinence, urgency, frequent and fragmented bowel movements, emptying difficulties, and excess intestinal gas. For Russ, life became a nightmare of constant bathroom trips, interrupted sleep, and the loss of basic freedoms. Kate wrote:

"Since my husband had his rectum removed in 2015, he's learned to live with LARS by greatly altering his diet and lifestyle. We learned that many people with LARS are using enemas for relief. This could truly be the answer we've been praying for."

Their story echoes another client, Bob, who after colorectal cancer surgery was left with no holding tank and became essentially a human Pez dispenser, as he describes it. He tried everything — Imodium, fiber, over-the-counter medications. Nothing worked. Until he found the enema:

"The first enema I took gave me 23 hours of no bathroom duty. I've done one enema a day for five months now. I have a life again. I'm cruising. I can eat. I can sleep. I can play music. The best 45 minutes of my day."

Scientific Support: Why Enemas Work

The colon is designed to store waste until it's ready to be eliminated. In conditions like LARS, in which the rectum has been surgically removed, that storage function is compromised. Therapeutic enemas provide a practical, non-invasive way to empty the colon at a chosen time, creating predictability and restoring a sense of control.

Research published in Techniques in Coloproctology (2020) confirms that transanal irrigation (TAI), which includes enema use, significantly improves quality of life for patients with major LARS symptoms. A 2023 study in Colorectal Disease similarly found that regular enema use reduced fecal incontinence episodes and urgency in patients post-resection surgery.

Moreover, enemas help cleanse the colon without the use of pharmaceuticals, reducing irritation and inflammation. When done correctly with the right tools — such as a 2- or 3-quart silicone enema bag kit, quality flex tip nozzles, therapeutic additives like goat milk soap, essential oils, and sea salt — enemas can gently retrain the bowel and promote a healthy microbiome.

How To Cure (or Manage) Stress Incontinence Holistically

While enemas do not cure incontinence, they offer a profoundly empowering management solution. When integrated with other holistic tools — nutritional therapy, pelvic floor exercises, mindfulness practices, and individualized supplementation — the results can be life-changing.

For men experiencing urinary incontinence or prostate-related symptoms, we recommend our prostate health protocol, which includes:

These integrated practices have shown to restore bladder function and reduce urgency.

Freedom, Dignity, and Daily Life

Kate and Russ are still early in their journey, but already Russ is experiencing longer stretches between bowel movements, deeper sleep, and renewed hope. Bob's story, too, continues to inspire:

"Why am I writing this? I suffered for almost two years before finding this protocol. I was desperate. Now I have a life. You can do this."

The enema, when approached with care and respect, can restore a person's sense of agency. It can return freedom to travel, to eat without dread, to attend a concert, to dance again, to rest deeply at night. This isn't just about bowel function — it's about quality of life.
