Choosing the Right Enema Nozzle

There are hundreds of different types of enema nozzles and colon tubes for sale on the internet, and for those who are new to enemas, finding the right one can be a daunting task.

enema nozzle types

Many of the disposable, lower-quality enema kits that you might buy at your local pharmacy include hard plastic nozzles or cheap colon tubes. Such equipment works fine for some people for the short or long term, but for many people these one-size-fits-all, hard nozzles are not ideal, and can make enemas much more uncomfortable than they should be.

Optimal Health Network has expanded its nozzle selection over the years in an effort to meet everyone's needs. The nozzles we offer can be divided into four main categories:

  1. Flexible plastisol nozzles
  2. Silicone colon tubes
  3. Inflatable retention nozzles
  4. Delrin nozzles

Flexible Plastisol Nozzles

These tend to be our most popular nozzle options, especially for those who are newer to home enemas. These nozzles are strong and flexible, easy to use, and need to be inserted only a couple of inches for an effective enema experience.

We offer this type of nozzle in two sizes:

  • Standard Flex Tip Nozzle - This nozzle has a diameter of 5/8" (1.6 cm) and works well for most adults.
  • Junior Flex Tip Nozzle - This nozzle has a diameter of 7/16" (1.1 cm) and generally works well for younger children and smaller adults.

Silicone Colon Tubes

silicone colon tubes

Our silicone colon tubes, available in 20" length (51 cm) or 30" length (76 cm), have a smooth, tapered end that allows for easy and comfortable insertion. They can be inserted further into the colon than a standard enema nozzle, allowing for a deeper cleanse, and can also help with delivering colon implants and therapeutic solutions deeply into the colon.

These colon tubes have a 5/16" (0.8 cm) diameter at their widest point (before the taper).

Inflatable Retention Nozzles

The balloon-type retention device of these nozzles allows you to be hands-free during your enema without having to worry about leaking, which makes it easier to massage your colon and use the clamp and bulb pump during your enema.

Leaking during enemas can be stressful and messy. If you have any issues with leaking, or difficulty retaining enemas, our inflatable retention nozzles can help!

We offer three types of inflatable retention nozzles:

Enema Retention Flexible Inflatable Nozzle System
  • Enema Retention Flexible Inflatable Nozzle System

This is a flexible plastisol enema nozzle with a silicone retention balloon and inflator. The enema retention nozzle combines the comfort of a normal plastisol enema nozzle with the retention capability of a balloon-type inflation device. The nozzle is inflated with a pillow inflator and keyhole clamp.

This enema nozzle is designed for one-time hospital use, but with proper care can be used many times. It will need replacing with frequent use.
  • Inflatable Silicone Retention Nozzle with Syringe
  • Inflatable Silicone Retention Nozzle with Syringe

This easy-to-use nozzle system consists of a 1-oz. (30-cc) syringe inflator and an inflatable silicone colon tube.

The nozzle's connector is compatible with any standard 5/16" (0.8 cm) diameter tubing.

This enema nozzle is an ideal option for those seeking a smaller retention nozzle for easier insertion.
  • Inflatable Double Bulb Silicone Retention Nozzle
  • Inflatable Double Bulb Silicone Retention Nozzle

One of our larger enema nozzle options, this system is recommended for those with a loose anus (from age or childbirth) who struggle with leaking or retaining enemas when using other retention nozzles. The two silicone balloons are soft and flexible, and when inflated create a seal to prevent leaking.

The nozzle is inserted into the body along with the first balloon. The second, smaller balloon remains outside the body. Both balloons are then inflated, creating an internal feeling of fullness and an external seal. Once the seal is created, enema solution can be smoothly introduced via an enema bag system.

The premium silicone is very soft yet flexible, for comfortable use. Each bulb has an integrated release valve for quick deflation and easy removal.

WARNING: Over-distention of an inflatable rectal nozzle may cause it to burst, which in some cases could tear the rectum wall, which can lead to serious or fatal illness. DO NOT overinflate your enema retention nozzle. The effectiveness of the inflatable nozzle is strictly in its ability to allow you to retain an enema solution. The retention of solution can be achieved with a MINIMAL amount of inflation. As a careful test, always inflate the nozzle before you insert it into your body to ascertain how much the balloon actually inflates. Be sure to deflate the balloon before inserting into the anus AND before removing it, as well.

Delrin Nozzles

Delrin enema nozzles are made of Delrin® medical grade plastic, the hardest and smoothest material available. These durable, high-quality nozzles last years with proper care, and are a great investment if you will be taking enemas frequently and/or over the long term.

Delrin enema nozzles

The high polish, smoothness, and absence of seams or irritating edges on a Delrin nozzle make it easy to insert and ideal for those suffering from hemorrhoids or anal fissures. The larger diameter of some of our Delrin nozzles can also help many people retain enemas without leaking.

We offer six types of Delrin nozzles with slightly varied shapes and diameters. Diameters range from 3/4" (1.9 cm) to 1.25" (3.2 cm).

Conclusion

Using the wrong enema nozzle can irritate your anus, result in messy leaking, or make enemas so uncomfortable that some people give them up altogether. Ensuring that you have the appropriate equipment for your needs can make a world of difference in your enema experience.

Don't forget that a key part of taking a safe and successful enema is lubricating your nozzle well. We recommend using either Surgilube or therapeutic Super Salve as a lubricant.
