What Is a Coffee Enema?
A coffee enema is a type of enema that uses a diluted coffee solution inserted into the rectum and lower colon. Many people use coffee enemas as part of holistic wellness, cleansing, or detox routines.
This guide explains how to prepare a coffee enema, what equipment you need, how to perform one at home, and answers common questions.
What Does a Coffee Enema Do for the Body? How Does A Coffee Enema Cleanse the Liver?
A properly performed coffee enema greatly facilitates the release of toxins by:
- stimulating the liver, a main organ of detoxification, to produce more bile. Bile is a bodily fluid that has a role in fat digestion and into which many toxins, both internally and externally generated, are dissolved for removal from the body through the gallbladder, small intestine, and colon.
- causing the muscles of the bile duct to relax, opening the duct widely to produce a large flow of bile from the gallbladder into the small intestine (where you should have a binding agent present — chlorophyll — to tightly bind the toxins to prevent reabsorption). This allows the liver to rid itself of many toxins quickly, freeing it to process more blood-transported toxins from throughout the body. This liver cleanse results in a systemic detoxification effect and greater overall well-being. All the blood in your body passes through the portal vein to the liver about every three minutes.
- increasing production of glutathione S-transferase (GST), a key detoxification enzyme. GST shuttles toxins for binding with glutathione, which neutralizes them and carries them out of the body in the bile.
- speeding transit of waste through the colon, especially when doing the full 3-step enema series protocol.
Quick Start Guide
What You'll Need
Basic Coffee Enema Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2-4 cups filtered water
- 2-4 tablespoons (Tbs) ground coffee
How to Do a Coffee Enema
Step 1: Prepare Your Space
Choose a comfortable area in or near a bathroom. Lay down towels or a yoga mat.
Step 2: Prepare The Coffee Solution
Brew the enema coffee using approximately 1 TB ground coffee per cup of filtered water. Strain thoroughly. Allow the solution to cool to body temperature (about 98 degrees).
Step 3: Prepare Your Body
If taking a binding agent such as chlorophyll, take that approximately 30 minutes before you start the coffee enema. If you are doing the full 3-step enema series, or a single cleansing enema, do that prior to the coffee enema. Instructions can be found here.
Step 4: Fill the Enema System
Make sure the clamp on your tubing is closed. Fill your enema bag or bucket with the prepared coffee solution. Optional: Add 5-10 drops of the coffee enema blend or tangerine to your coffee solution for enhanced detoxification benefits.
Step 5: Remove Air From the Tubing
Open the clamp briefly to allow a small amount of liquid to flow through the tubing, all the way to the nozzle, to ensure there is no air in your tubing.
Step 6: Insert the Nozzle
Apply lubricant to the nozzle and insert gently.
Step 7: Administer the Solution
Allow the coffee solution to flow slowly into the colon. If you experience any cramping or uncomfortable pressure, clamp the tubing, massage the belly, and then resume taking in the solution more slowly once cramping has subsided. Only take in what your colon will comfortably hold.
Step 8: Retain the Solution
Once you've taken in all of the solution, retain the solution for approximately 12-15 minutes.
Step 9: Empty the Colon
After 12-15 minutes, go to the toilet, remove the nozzle, and empty the solution from the colon. Make sure you clean your equipment thoroughly after each enema session.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I hold a coffee enema?
The optimal amount of time to hold a coffee enema is 12-15 minutes. Not everyone can do this, and that's ok! If you are struggling to hold the solution for that long, you could be taking in too much, or you could have a nozzle that is not right for you. Taking in less coffee solution or using a retention nozzle can help retain the coffee for longer. Just do your best and hold the solution for as close to 12-15 minutes as you can.
How much coffee should I use?
Most protocols use approximately 1 tablespoon (TB) of ground coffee per quart of water. If you are highly sensitive, start on the lower end, or you could start with even 1 teaspoon (t) for your first enema, and then work your way up.
Can beginners do a coffee enema?
Yes! Many beginners start with a weaker solution and shorter retention times. Make sure to listen to your body throughout the process.
What type of coffee is best?
You should use an organic coffee that is high in caffeine and palmitates, low in acid, and made specifically for enema use. We recommend the OHN Made-for-Enema Coffee.
What position should I be in for a coffee enema?
You can be in whatever position feels most comfortable and effective for your body. Some people prefer one side over the other, many prefer to lie on their back. You can move around as needed, listen to your body and do what feels best for you!
How often should I be doing coffee enemas?
This answer will vary a lot depending on the individual. Some people do the enema series daily, some people do it every other day or a couple times a week, once a week, once a month, every three months, etc. Many people find success doing the enema series 1-3 times per week when starting out, especially if you're trying to detox, heal from a specific issue, or improve the health of your gut microbiome. The general rule is that if enemas are making you feel better and not worse, do them as often as you want to or have time to. If you don't always feel better afterward, you might want to cut back on how frequently you're doing them.
Is a coffee enema the same as a cleansing enema?
No. A coffee enema uses brewed coffee, and is primarily for helping the liver and gallbladder detoxify, while cleansing enemas commonly use water or other solutions like our enema soap, and their main purpose is to clear stool from the colon. It's best for the colon to already be cleared out prior to doing a coffee enema. Learn more about cleansing enemas here.
Should I do a single coffee enema or the enema series?
Kristina recommends doing the 3-step enema series protocol to maximize the benefits of a coffee enema. You will see the best results if your colon is cleared out prior to doing a coffee enema. If you don't have the time or ability to do the full 3-step series every time, it's ok to do just one cleansing enema! Learn more here about modifying the enema series to fit your needs.
What type of enema kit is best?
Stainless steel enema buckets and silicone enema bags with silicone hosing are the least toxic set-ups to use and worth the extra money. They will minimize the leaching of toxins into the enema coffee. Latex and soft plastic (vinyl and otherwise) enema bags are not recommended — coffee and essential oils will degrade the latex over time. Check out our enema kits and coffee enema kits.

The Benefits of Coffee Enemas
Kristina Amelong, CCT, CNC, explains the therapeutic benefits of colon cleansing via organic coffee enemas. These benefits include broad detoxifying properties that promote positive results in the treatment of health issues such as fibromyalgia, prostatitis, BPH, Lyme disease, IBS, constipation, Candida overgrowth, heavy metal toxicity, multiple chemical sensitivities, and more.
Kristina also provides information on our recommended enema series protocol, a recipe for your coffee enema, and additional enema tips.

Enema Bags vs. Enema Buckets
Coffee enemas can be taken using either a bucket or a silicone bag. Our silicone enema bag kits include heavy-duty S-hooks, which make it easy to hang your bag from a shower curtain or doorknob. Our stainless steel buckets are sturdy and can be set on any flat surface such as a sink edge or an end table. Both our enema buckets and our enema bags are easy to clean and dry. The enema bags are easy to store and travel with, whereas the enema buckets take up more space. The stainless steel buckets are very high in quality, and their price reflects the craftsmanship that goes into making them. The silicone bags are also higher in quality than most enema bags, and their price reflects this quality, however they are more cost-effective than the stainless steel buckets.

Single Coffee Enema vs. Enema Series
Clinically, the enema series is more effective than a single enema. The first two enemas are essential to the effectiveness of the final enema, which is a coffee enema. Because the primary action of the coffee enema is to allow the coffee solution to be absorbed into the portal vein**, you don't want to reabsorb any toxic byproducts of the waste sitting in the lower colon. You want to first cleanse that waste with the first two enemas in the series. The enema series was created to optimize the therapeutic benefits of the coffee enema.
** The portal vein or hepatic portal vein is a blood vessel that carries blood from the gastrointestinal tract, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen to the liver. About 75% of total liver blood flow is through the portal vein.
Why Choose the Enema Series Kit?
Kristina Amelong, CCT, CNC, explains that clinically the enema series is more effective than a single enema.
