THE INTESTINAL ECOSYSTEM: THE MISSING LINK Excerpt from Kristina Amelong's Ten Days to Optimal Health Declining levels of healthy bacteria in most people's intestinal tracts, due to not only a lack of fermented foods in the diet, but also to an overuse of antibiotics, a lack of locally grown, organic food in the diet, and an excessive consumption of carbohydrates, all encourage an overgrowth of toxin-producing organisms such as Candida albicans and Clostridium species. These naturally occurring organisms then overpopulate the intestinal tract and cause a wide array of confusing health problems. When these naturally occurring organisms are overgrown in our bodies, they become opportunistic parasites. Unfortunately, many of us are overrun with these parasites. Because of this, our bodies are vulnerable to many health problems. Some of these problems are: a) A microbial overgrowth can cause structural damage to the intestinal mucosa, thereby diminishing its ability to eliminate waste and maintain a blood barrier for microbial and dietary waste. This condition is called "leaky gut," and leads to many autoimmune diseases, and food allergies. b) The waste products of many of these organisms are toxic. These toxic wastes place an increased load on the body. Many people then become allergic to their own inner environment, which turns into chronic illness, chemical sensitivities, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel, and so on. Crohn's disease, which afflicts more than 500,000 people in the United States, is a classic example of a person's immune system trying to deal with an overload of microbes. Because our microbes are very much a "part" of our tissues, the immune system is forced to attack the body's own tissues in an attempt to remove the excess microbes and their toxins. c) The enzymes from some of these bacteria convert normal stool, derived from food and bile, into chemicals that can cause cancer. Given that microbial overgrowth tends to be pervasive in modern living, it is no wonder that colon cancer is the number-two occurring cancer in this country. d) Chronic fatigue, mood disorders, skin problems, obesity, diabetes, and GERD all have as one of their causes a microbial overgrowth. e) Constipation is largely caused by an overgrowth of unhealthy microbes. Stool is largely the byproduct of the life cycle of healthy bacteria. When a colon is overgrown with unhealthy microbes, it is almost impossible for the body to produce a healthy, daily bowel movement.
