What Is a Home Colonic?

Are you interested in learning more about home colonics? Learning how to safely and effectively deliver therapeutic solutions into the colon is quite easy with the proper resources — and a great way to build a healthier relationship with your body!

A home colonic, also known as an enema or an enema series, is a time-tested and clinically validated form of water-based therapy of the colon (large intestine) taken in the privacy of your home.

A home colonic is self-administered using high-quality enema equipment to deliver therapeutic solutions consisting of filtered warm water plus beneficial additives such as healthy salts, essential oils, or enema coffee.

What Is Colon Hydrotherapy?

A colonic at a clinic, called colon hydrotherapy, is administered by a trained colon therapist. The equipment used during a colon hydrotherapy session gently delivers warm water into your colon by filling, allowing for release, and then refilling your colon many times while you relax as the colon therapist massages your belly and provides emotional support.

The equipment used must be FDA-approved as a medical device and sterilized after each use. The speculum and tubing are disposable, used only once. The water in an FDA-approved colon hydrotherapy machine always goes through an advanced filtration process prior to entering your colon.

How Much Does a Home Colonic Cost?

A home colonic generally costs between $15 and $200, with the greatest cost being the initial purchase of the enema equipment, which you can reuse many, many times over the long term if it is properly cleaned and stored.

In contrast, a colonic at a colon hydrotherapy clinic costs between $80 and $200 per session. Therefore home colonics are much more economical as a long-term investment if you plan to take enemas regularly.

A home enema series takes 60 to 120 minutes because you are taking time to empty your colon on the toilet and you are refilling your enema equipment for three enemas in succession, each with a different therapeutic solution.

For a colon cleanse at a clinic, allow 90 minutes from start to finish. The session itself lasts 30-60 minutes, you will spend some time in the restroom afterwards, and you will need time to check in and check out.

Do Colonics Hurt?

For the majority of people who take colonics, whether at home or at a clinic, the process is pain-free. Sometimes there is minor discomfort during insertion of the nozzle or speculum, lasting only for a few seconds. During the filling and releasing, sometimes there is minor cramping in the colon. Additionally, the process of a colonic can sometimes make you feel slightly nauseous.

Are Colonics Safe?

Colon cleansing is very safe when done in a clinic by a trained colon hydrotherapist or self-administered at home following proper instructions.

Could I Benefit from a Colonic?

Most of us are not aware of levels of toxins in our bodies because we become polluted over time, gradually forgetting what it feels like to be healthy and energetic. Even in the absence of specific symptoms, aging itself reduces the body's ability to detoxify, and unfortunately our world is getting more toxic every day. (Recently I was talking to a client whose medical doctor had told him, "There is nothing wrong with you, but there is really nothing right.")

The benefits of colon cleansing include increasing levels of healthy bacteria, reducing pathogenic organisms, helping to eliminate toxins from the body, supporting liver health, improving the body's overall detoxification abilities, relieving constipation, and/or recovering from a chronic illness.

Home colonics are often a core element to an alternative path through cancer. Home colonics assist people with many health problems that aren't being fully addressed by modern Western medicine. These difficulties include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), allergies, chronic sinus infections, prostatitis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, yeast overgrowth, food intolerances, and depression.

The body is an ingenious and efficient organism designed to heal. Every one of our cells is always striving toward optimal health. Unfortunately, we get in the body's way, usually with our lifestyle choices. Colon cleansing can often help mitigate common lifestyle ailments such as chronic backaches, headaches, emotional ups and downs, painful menstrual cycles, gas and bloating, and many more biochemical imbalances that many of us, with some resignation, tend to simply call "aging".

What Do I Need to Take a Colonic?

To set up an appointment with a clinic for colon hydrotherapy, look for a local therapist via the www.i-act.org website. Interview the clinic beforehand to make sure it is board-certified and uses FDA-approved equipment.
