Bulb syringes are used for small volume enemas. They are used to fill only the lower colon with water or other enema solutions. The bulb syringe is filled by squeezing the air out of the bulb, placing the tip of the bulb syringe into the water or solution, and releasing the bulb which creates suction to fill the bulb syringe with the liquid. After the tip is gently inserted into the rectum the filled bulb syringe is squeezed gently to empty the solution into the lower colon. Bulb syringes are used to relieve constipation in adults, children and infants. Our Small Volume Enema Downloadable Video demonstrates the use of a bulb syringe.
