How Does a Far Infrared (FIR) Sauna Work?
Far Infrared (FIR) Heat
The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into three segments by
wavelength measured in microns. A wavelength of 0.076 to 1.5 microns is "near"
infrared, 1.5 to 5.6 microns is "middle" infrared, and 5.6 to 1000
microns is "far" infrared (FIR). This invisible band of light warms objects
without warming the surrounding air. The best example of this is the sun. Consider
standing in the sun on a cold day. You feel warmth from the sun even
though the air temperature is cold. This warmth you feel is far
infrared penetrating your body 1.5 to 3.5 inches. Infrared heat is,
therefore, a completely safe energy that raises the temperature in
objects without having to heat the surrounding air. Approximately 80% of
the sun's rays fall into the infrared range. (This should not be
confused with ultraviolet rays, which are harmful to the skin.)
Infrared energy is not visible to the human eye but can been seen with special cameras
that translate the light into visible colors. Our bodies radiate
far infrared energy through the skin at between 3 and 50 microns. Our
palms emit infrared energy between 8 and 14 microns. (You can experience this by
holding your palms near each other without touching.) Palm healing,
with a 3000-year history in China, is based on the natural healing
properties of far infrared energy.
FIR Detox Therapy
The far infrared sauna therapy unit duplicates these healthy far
infrared frequencies. The tissues selectively absorb these rays as the
water in the cell reacts in a process called "resonant absorption." This occurs when the frequency of the far
infrared matches the frequency of the water in the cell, causing toxins
to be dropped off into the blood stream and excreted in sweat, feces,
and urine. Radiant heat is efficient because it warms you, rather than the air around you.
The body absorbs as much as 93 percent of this heat, causing
perspiration and producing an array of healthful benefits. The
sauna employs an infrared heater that radiates heat penetrating the
skin to a depth of 1.5 to 3.5 inches. It
operates at the relatively low recommended temperatures of 110° to 150°F.
Traditional vs. FIR Saunas
Traditional high-heat saunas usually operate at temperatures of 180° to 220°F. Most people cannot tolerate these high
temperatures for very long and it causes the mucous membranes to dry
out. This is why water or steam is introduced. Patients normally use FIR
saunas at between 100° and 130°F. This feels like a
warm, dry room and the perspiration characteristics are significantly
improved. Not only does the perspiration contain more toxins and less
water, but also more toxins are expelled through the kidneys,
liver, and even hair due to resonant absorption.

Sunlight Saunas
Sauna History
The sauna was invented by the early Finnish people and was introduced
to the world as a notable method for healing. Ancient peoples sat in an
enclosure for a period of time where the air was heated, usually by
stones in a fire. Sometimes water was dripped on the rocks to create
steam. Over the centuries, the sauna became known for its ability to
alleviate medical problems. Down through time, sand heating and steam
baths were used to create similar health benefits. Using infrared
energy to power a sauna follows in this tradition.
Dr. John Harvey Kellogg's Heat Therapy is worth noting here. Dr.
Kellogg was a renowned and highly successful surgeon who established an
alternative healing center in the late 1800s called the Battle Creek
Sanitarium, which people from all over the world visited to take saunas,
eat well, and take colon cleansing treatments. We at the Optimal Health
Center are proud to continue these traditions to avoid and alleviate
medical problems.
